The North American Cable Assembly Report:
By the Numbers

Bishop & Associates and the WHMA, in a joint research effort, have developed a report that details North American Cable Assembly Manufacturing. The purpose of the report is to identify companies and company divisions in the United States and Canada whose primary business is cable assembly manufacturing. The report includes a profile on each of the companies identified and an analysis of the data collected during the process. The following are some highlights presented at the WHMA conference.

We identify
736 businesses in the report, with a combined worldwide revenue estimate of $35.7 billion. One percent of the companies represented 76% of the total revenues.

Distribution of Revenues

California had the largest number of companies, 124, or 16.9% of the companies identified. Sixty-one percent of the companies are outside the top five states/provinces for cable assembly manufacturers.

Number of Companies per State/Province

Of the 736 companies:

  • 46 have operations in Mexico

  • 80 have operations in China and Asia Pacific

  • 30 companies primarily manufacture coaxial assemblies

  • 32 primarily manufacture fiber optic assemblies

  • Eight primarily service the automotive industry

  • 12 primarily service the medical industry

  • 59 primarily service the military/aerospace industry

Some other statistics:

  • Delphi is the largest company in the report, with estimated worldwide cable assembly sales of $8 billion in 2010.

  • The smallest company in the report had estimated sales of $300,000 in 2010.

  • The average company size was $48.6 million.

  • The median company size was $4 million.

Profiles of 728 companies are included in the report, as some of the 736 business identified fall under corporate profiles. The profiles include:

  • Company name, address, phone number, business manager, and website

  • Annual revenue projection

  • Manufacturing locations (regions of the world)

  • Markets served

  • Products produced

  • Agency approvals/certifications

  • Company description
