The Computer/Peripheral Market
for Cable Assemblies:
Industry Sales Cool Off
After
growing 17.8% in 2010, Bishop’s computer sector
sales slowed to a 7.5% pace in 2011. The
year-over-year increase in units shipped was a mere
1.9% in 2011. Peripherals slowed from 23.6% growth
in 2010 to 4.9% in 2011. And, as would be expected,
semi-conductor sales growth slowed to 1.9% in 2011.
More ominously, fourth quarter 2011 computer sales
declined 2.9% and semiconductor sales declined 5.5%,
sequentially. This does not bode well for the start
of 2012.
The computer/peripheral market for cable assemblies
grew 4.6% in 2011 to $19.7 billion worldwide, a
significant slowdown of growth from 2010. The
overall market is down slightly in the first quarter
2012, but the market is expected to grow at a
slightly faster pace in 2012 than in 2011.
While 2011 sales in the computer/peripheral sector
showed growth, the unit volume growth was lower than
expected in early 2011. In late 2010, Gartner had
projected shipments of 409 million units for 2011.
The actual results were closer to 350 million units.
These markets have been hurt primarily by the slow
economic recovery and persistent high unemployment.

COTS vs. the Cable in
Special Purpose Electrical Applications
The COTS program was designed to save money and
streamline design. But in many cases, it has failed
to live up to its promise, in part because of the
need for customization in many cable assemblies. |
